Prioritising Mental Health in the Workplace

Insights from ecoDynamics MHFA Training

Mental health is a vital aspect of overall wellbeing that directly impacts our ability to handle stress, maintain relationships, and make decisions – both in our personal lives and at work. As organisations continue to evolve in their approach to employee wellbeing, many are recognising the value of Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training as a key tool for fostering a supportive and resilient workplace culture.

Understanding MHFA Training

MHFA training is a comprehensive course that equips participants with the skills and knowledge to assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis. Recently, Vasilios Paparounis, ecoDynamics Group HSEQ Manager and Ali Kader, ecoDynamics Group HR Manager had the opportunity to complete the MHFA course, which provided an eye-opening experience about the importance of supporting the wellbeing of others. The training covers crucial aspects of mental health support, emphasising the need for awareness and the significance of intervening when someone may be suffering in silence.

A core element of MHFA training is the ALGEE action plan, which provides a clear framework for responding to mental health crises:

  • Approach, assess, and assist: Evaluate the situation by assessing the risk of suicide or harm while looking for signs of anxiety, trauma, or distress.
  • Listen non-judgmentally: Create a safe, open space for the individual to express themselves without fear of judgment.
Give reassurance and information: Offer support, comfort, and accurate information to guide them toward professional help.
  • Encourage appropriate professional help: Advocate for mental health support through counselling, therapy, or medical intervention.
  • Encourage self-help and other strategies: Promote self-care, peer support, and lifestyle changes to enhance mental wellbeing.
  • Through this structured approach, MHFA equips employees with the tools to provide immediate and meaningful support to colleagues in need.

The Role of HR in Mental Health Support

Human Resources (HR) plays a pivotal role in fostering a supportive environment for mental health within ecoDynamics. Maintaining the confidentiality of sensitive conversations while offering appropriate guidance is key to building trust.

“At ecoDynamics, we’re deeply committed to creating an environment where employees feel safe discussing their mental health concerns without fear of stigma or judgment,” Ali says.

By implementing MHFA training, HR can empower employees to engage in conversations about mental health, reducing the associated stigma and encouraging a culture of openness. When employees feel supported, they are more likely to be productive, engaged, and motivated – ultimately benefiting the entire ecoDynamics Group.

Benefits of MHFA in the Workplace

Incorporating MHFA training into the workplace offers a range of benefits:

  • Enhanced employee wellbeing: Supported employees are more likely to remain productive and engaged.
  • Stigma reduction: By normalising discussions about mental health, the stigma surrounding mental health issues is gradually diminished.
  • Crisis management: With the ALGEE framework, employees are equipped to handle mental health crises effectively, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of their colleagues.
  • Stronger team cohesion: A supportive environment fosters trust, collaboration, and empathy among team members, leading to stronger relationships and improved teamwork.
As Vasilios, Group HSEQ Manager at ecoDynamics shares, “Mental health is integral to overall health and safety. For ecoDynamics, ensuring the mental wellbeing of our workforce leads to better productivity, greater engagement, and fewer sick days. By integrating mental health support into health and safety protocols, our business can create a resilient and well-rounded workforce.”

Why Prioritise MHFA in our Organisation?

Implementing MHFA training in the workplace is not only a compassionate choice – it’s a strategic one. Prioritising mental health creates a more resilient, engaged, and productive workforce. By equipping employees with the skills to handle mental health crises, organisations can foster a healthier, more supportive environment. At ecoDynamics, we’re committed to this vision.

Remember, no one should feel alone – support is always available.
