From Dead Ground to Green Growth: Hydromulching Success at Lake Eppalock Caravan Park

Creating green, usable outdoor spaces in harsh or depleted soil conditions can be a challenge—especially in exposed environments like parklands and caravan parks. But as recent work at a Lake Eppalock Caravan Park, the right approach can transform even the toughest sites into thriving green spaces.

This site presented several challenges from the outset:

  • Poor soil structure and low organic content
  • Large volumes of rock preventing soil ripping or cultivation
  • Cold winter temperatures below 10°C
  • Exposure to wind and heavy rainfall.

Despite these conditions, our Mulch and Services team applied ProGanics® to the large campground and  ProGanics® Dual to the bushland sites— a biotic soil media and high-performance hydromulch designed to rebuild soil health and protect seed through early growth.

Stage progression

Before – 1 May

The site was a typical “dead zone” – thin soil, little organic matter, and no existing vegetation cover.

Application begins – 11 June

With soil unable to be ripped due to rock content, we surface-applied ProGanics Dual, rebuilding soil profile and providing a stable seedbed. Temperatures remained below 10°C, typically unfavourable for germination.

Germination – 3 July (3 weeks later)

Despite cold conditions, we saw healthy germination emerging across the treated areas — a strong indicator that the biotic soil media was supporting root establishment.

Green Coverage – 14 August (8 weeks)

By week eight, vegetation coverage had exceeded 90%, even though warm weather had yet to arrive. During this period, the site experienced multiple extreme rainfall events, including 50mm overnight.

Thanks to the erosion control properties of ProGanics Dual, seed remained in place, with no washout — something that surprised and impressed the client and their onsite staff.

“We honestly expected to wake up to bare soil after that rain event — but the coverage held. The product really did what it said it would.”
— Site Manager, Lake Eppalock Caravan Park

The outcome

What began as a barren, compacted, and nutrient-poor landscape has now become a living green zone.

This approach has proven that:

  • Even degraded soil can be rebuilt without excavation or heavy mechanical disturbance.
  • Hydromulching provides reliable erosion control, even in adverse weather.
  • Growth can still be achieved in cold seasonal windows, with the right soil media support.

Why this matters for Caravan Parks and Campgrounds

Caravan parks are often working with:

  • ✔ High-traffic, compacted zones
  • ✔ Poor soils
  • ✔ Limited irrigation
  • ✔ Exposure to seasonal weather extremes.

This project shows that you don’t need perfect soil to create a thriving landscape.
With the correct hydraulic revegetation approach, dead zones can become green, usable spaces that improve guest experience and environmental value.
