Breakout Creek Stage 3 Redevelopment Landscaping Project

About Breakout Creek Stage 3 redevelopment landscaping project
Bardavcol engaged ecoDynamics’ SA Landscaping team to rejuvenate the western stretch of the River Torrens, also known by its Kaurna name, Karrawirra Pari.
The project spanned 1.5km of river and riverbank, extending from Tapleys Hill Road all the way to the sea. It opened up 15 hectares of previously fenced-off land that created vibrant new green spaces for the community to explore and enjoy.
Commitment to environmental restoration
Our SA Landscaping team was entrusted with the critical task of eradicating invasive weeds and planting over 215,000 native, locally propagated plants. These plants were sourced directly from our SA-based nursery in Penfield Gardens. These efforts established thriving habitats for endangered and rare wildlife species, while enhancing the overall health and water quality of the river.
Collaborating with the Kaurna people
A cornerstone of this project was collaborating with the Kaurna people, the Traditional Owners of the Adelaide plains. Together, we created spaces where visitors connect with and learn about Kaurna culture and history. The redevelopment also respects existing community uses including maintaining a designated horse area and constructing a new bridle path for the local horse riding club near Apex Park.
To enhance safety and accessibility, the project upgraded existing walkways, introduced improved lighting, and facilitated better access for pedestrians, cyclists, and maintenance vehicles.
Project partners and funding
The $14 million Breakout Creek Stage 3 redevelopment is a collaborative initiative involving Green Adelaide, City of Charles Sturt, City of West Torrens, the South Australian Department for Trade and Investment through the Planning and Development Fund, the Australian Government, and SA Water. Central to the project’s success is its ongoing partnership with the Kaurna people, ensuring respect for cultural heritage and meaningful community engagement.
Excellence Award winner
ecoDynamics congratulates all partners involved in the Breakout Creek/Purruna Pari Stage 3 Redevelopment. In 2025, the project achieved outstanding recognition at the AILA SA Awards, winning two prestigious Awards of Excellence in Land Management and Parks & Open Space.
The Breakout Creek Stage 3 Redevelopment project reconnects people to place with more than 6km of trails, wetlands, viewing platforms, and river crossings. It’s a true testament to the visionary landscape leadership and a 30-year commitment to sustainable urban revitalisation.
Adapting to changing weather challenges
This key urban waterway and essential drainage channel for much of Adelaide has faced significant challenges during last spring and summer’s heavy rains. This year (2023), however, marked a new chapter. Our dedicated team undertook a comprehensive mission to revitalise and strengthen this vital watercourse.
Over the past 12 months, our efforts have brought to life a range of carefully planned enhancements, including:
- Extensive native plantings to restore natural habitat
- Durable, resilient gabion walls for long-term erosion control
- Hydroseeding approximately 35,000m² of dryland areas
- Thorough preparation and establishment of garden beds.
Our approach has beautified and fortified Breakout Creek against future weather extremes and environmental pressures.
The project’s success is a testament to the collective dedication of every team member. From our expert SA-based nursery staff nurturing plants behind the scenes to on-ground crews delivering hands-on redevelopment.
As the SA Landscaping team transitions into the 3-year maintenance phase, our commitment remains steadfast. We’ll continue nurturing this urban waterway, ensuring it flourishes and is ready for a seamless handover to the community.
