Seafarers Lane Blowing Project

ecoDynamics tackled tight access and urban constraints at Seafarers Lane, using blower trucks and crane-assisted hose placement to install sand and mulch for Docklands Child Care Centre’s elevated playground.

About the Seafarers Lane blowing project

In 2022, ecoDynamics delivered an innovative material installation solution at the Seafarers Lane Project on behalf of the City of Melbourne. Our client, Programmed Property Services, approached our Services team with a unique challenge of installing sand and softfall mulch to an upper-level playground at the busy Docklands Child Care Centre, located on Level 1.

The challenge

The project called for installing bulk materials—kiln-dried sand and Softfall mulch—onto an elevated, enclosed site in a high-density urban area. Access was tight, with limited space, height restrictions, and the need to protect the building’s façade.

Our solution

Our team used blower trucks to transport and place both materials precisely . However, manoevring the blower hoses into the elevated site required some problem-solving. This included:

  • Deploying a crane boom to support and lift the blower hose over the façade, preventing any contact or damage to the building. This setup allowed the team to safely and accurately direct materials onto the Level 1 playground and sandpit area.
  • Seamless road closures and detailed traffic management planning. This enables the team to coordinate the blower truck, sand tanker, and crane in the busy Docklands precinct.

Scope of work

  • 12 m³ of Softfall mulch delivered and blown from a blower truck
  • 6.5 m³ of kiln-dried sand delivered and blown from a dedicated sand tanker.

The result

Despite the complex site constraints, our team delivered a safe, efficient, and precise installation that created a functional, safe, and attractive play space for the Docklands Child Care Centre.
