In August 2025, ecoDynamics proudly delivered a unique and meaningful project at The Royal Children’s Hospital Meerkat Enclosure — a much-loved attraction beside Royal Park. We drew on our long-standing partnership with Melbourne Zoo, built through numerous projects within their compound, to manage the delicate process of replacing the enclosure’s soil.
Melbourne Zoo chose ecoDynamics because we combine environmental responsibility with technical precision, and we deliver tailored solutions that meet complex site requirements. Our collaborative, problem-solving approach kept the project running smoothly from start to finish, even within the highly specialised and sensitive meerkat habitat.
Over time, the enclosure’s soil degraded, so we designed a careful replacement. We supplied and installed an E2 specialty subsoil blend — low in organics and free from fertilisers — to protect the health of the meerkat mob and replicate the conditions of their natural habitat. This balance of science and care supports Melbourne Zoo’s mission to provide the highest standard of animal welfare.

Project challenges & solutions
The enclosure’s sunken position at ground level created several logistical challenges. To overcome them, our team:
- Used a 30-metre blowing hose to reach the enclosure.
- Navigated sloped terrain carefully to deliver soil safely.
- Coordinated temporary tree trimming, fence removal, and traffic management to allow truck access through Royal Park, which Melbourne City Council manages.
- Pre-positioned a top-up sling of soil on site to refill the blower truck quickly and avoid downtime.
By planning ahead and working precisely, we completed soil delivery and placement safely and efficiently in just over two hours.
Community impact
Beyond the technical delivery, the project holds deep community significance. The meerkats are beloved by patients, families, and visitors to the hospital, offering comfort, education, and moments of joy to children undergoing treatment. Their enclosure is prominently located in the Specialist Clinics Reception A waiting area, where it provides comfort, education, and joy to children undergoing treatment.
